CO. TIPPERARY - A chance stopping of a van by a Gardai patrol on Monday afternoon has led to the arrest of two men and the seizure of drugs worth an estimated €550,000.

Another €21,000 in cash was also seized.

Gardaí in Killenaule, Co Tipperary have since launched a wider investigation following the arrests and seizures.

The drama began when Gardaí were on patrol in Ballinure, Co Tipperary at around 3.45pm on Monday afternoon.  Officers attempted to stop a van, however the van failed to stop. As the van continued on its way officers noticed two packages being thrown from the vehicle on to a field.

The van stopped a short distance away and the driver and a passenger, a 45-year old man, and a 22-year old man were arrested. The two packages were retrieved and found to have contained Ecstasy tablets with an estimated street value of €150,000.

Gardai then conducted a number of searches at residential addresses in the Cashel and Killenaule areas and during the course of these searches, Cannabis Herb with an estimated street value of €400,000 and €21,000 in cash were discovered.

The two men arrested are currently detained at Thurles Garda Station while the wider investigation continues.
