CORK, Ireland: Customs officials in Ireland announced last week that they have seized the equivalent of 33,000 bottles, about 6,538 gallons, of counterfeit wine.
The wine was coming in through the Tivoli Container Terminal, located in the Irish city of Cork.
The confiscated wine was valued at about $360,000
Of note, by confiscating the wine, the treasury loses out on approximately $192,500 in revenues, according to officials.
"This seizure is part of Revenue's ongoing operations targeting the supply and sale of illicit alcohol products in the shadow economy," the agency said in a statement. "If businesses, or members of the public, have any information, they are asked to contact [us] in confidence."
It is believed that this is the largest seizure of wine in the past five years or more.
