'Journalism can never be silent: that is its greatest virtue and its greatest fault. It must speak, and speak immediately, while the echoes of wonder, the claims of triumph and the signs of horror are still in the air.' - Henry Grunwald
Social change has the power to transform society. The change is slow, happens over time, but it is also groundbreaking and influential. It is the freedom of speech and the social movements that influence society, preparing it for a change. From certain social prejudice and a cry for a just system, journalism catalyzes progressive social change.
In order to inform and convince people of existing social problems, a journalist needs to have a deep understanding of policy formulation, current social issues, and the country's political dynamics. Using this information, a journalist can easily form a story so strong that it instantly drives a reaction from the public. Journalists such as Romail Gulzar, who dedicated over twenty years of his life spreading awareness about the injustice around him, have taken over the responsibility to educate and influence the people to take political actions through precise and rigorous reporting.
Journey Towards Journalism
Romail Gulzar's story is heartbreaking, but it is also one of the reasons why he fought so hard to bring a change in society. Gulzar's early life in Lahore, Pakistan, was quite difficult, and he struggled immensely to grow and reach his full potential. Sadly, in some parts of Pakistan, minorities are treated as second-class citizens, and Gulzar, a Christian, was one of the unfortunate individuals who grew up in an unfair system. Searching for justice and equality, he moved to Dubai for a while and later to the United Kingdom in 2000, where he currently resides. In Southhampton, Gulzar worked in a factory, trying to support his family with multiple jobs. While the journalist believed he would be granted equality in Britain, many people belittled him for his refugee status. Keeping his spirits high and not letting his financial struggles get the best of him, the keen journalist stepped back for a while to observe his surroundings. During this time, Gulzar realized that inequality was everywhere, and he could no longer run away from it. Rather than trying to escape from reality, the aspiring journalist took matters into his own hands and decided to revolutionize society using his voice and love for journalism.
After obtaining a Higher National Diploma in television and journalism from South Leicestershire College, Romail studied Film Journalism from an Indian institute called the Asian Academy of Film and Television (AAFT). With his drive to succeed and work for the well-being of society, Gulzar polished his journalistic skills and took over several projects that would give him ample experience to build his journalism career. Observing his surroundings and developing a deep understanding of society, the journalist worked in the broadcasting sector for a little while before finally getting the confidence and experience to launch his very own news site, Pukaar News closely followed by the quarterly printed publication, Pukaar Magazine. A decade later, both are going strong under the conglomerate, Pukaar Group, which has expanded to also offer a range of web and digital marketing services.
Making strides in the media, Romail soon expanded the Pukaar group and launched Pukaar News and Pukaar Magazine to diversify the society. The journalist is a firm believer in the fact that change in society happens when awareness about social issues is created. He ensures that his mass-media company covers current affairs and global issues that create havoc in this world with his ideology. The media house consists of remarkable journalists working rigorously to provide the public with inspiring stories and discussions of the social, economic, and political conditions surrounding them. While Pukaar news has provided broadcast-quality journalism for the BBC, Sky News, ITV, the Pukaar Magazine is distributed across Leicestershire. The complete lifestyle magazine also has featured columns on fashion, travel, sport, and entertainment. It reflects and celebrates its multicultural city and has a sizeable South Asian magazine audience. Gulzar's hard work and effort surely did pay off with several accolades he has won during his lifetime. Representing Pakistani Christians, Gulzar was granted with Award of Honor Pakistan Minorities Rights Organization in 2012. He has also won the Outstanding Contribution Award in 2013 and the Nationwide Awards in 2005.
Romail Gulzar has proven his worth as an outstanding journalist, trying his level best to serve humanity. With a focus on diversifying the community, the brown man from Pakistan is ready to change the world. Romail believes that his struggles in life have shaped him into the individual he is today. Rather than waiting for change to happen, he wants journalism to persuade the public to unite against injustice. He wants to use the power of his words to make people realize the realities and brutalities of the world.
