DUBLIN, Ireland: U.S. healthcare giant Abbott Laboratories has announced plans to hire 1,000 more employees in Ireland this year.

Meanwhile, state investment agency IDA Ireland described the Abbott plan as one of the biggest job announcements in Ireland this year.

Abbott already employs 5,000 staff in Ireland, and is one of the largest multinational employers in Ireland.

Plans call for Abbot to expand its manufacturing facilities in the county of Donegal, as well as construct a new plant in Kilkenny.

The new construction is part of a $450 million investment in Ireland, said Abbott's senior vice-president for diabetes care, Jared Watkin.

In an interview with the Irish Times, Watkins said that the new facilities in Ireland will be used to manufacture devices that monitor glucose levels.

Ireland saw job growth among multinationals in Ireland reach record levels in the first half of 2022, as unemployment rates fell to a 21-year low of 4.2 percent.
