Man murdered at stag party in Athlone: Two arrested

ATHLONE, Ireland - Gardai have arrested two men in connection with a fatal assault in Athlone on Friday night.

One of the men arrested is 19 years old, and the other is in his 30s.

The victim, known locally as Paul 'Babs' Connolly, was from Edenderry in County Offaly.

When the assault occurred, the 49-year-old was at a stag party. He was taken to Ballinasloe's Portiuncula University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Garda has asked witnesses to come forward.

They are especially interested in speaking with anyone in the nearby taxi rank waiting area between 2.15 am, and 3 am.

Anyone who may have assisted the victim is also asked to contact the garda, who is looking for the owners of vehicles parked in the area, and anyone who drove down Church Street between 2.15 am and 3 am.

Anyone with video footage, such as dash-cam recordings, is asked to share it.
