CO LAOIS, Ireland - A 5-year old boy who was hit by a car in Co Laois on Saturday has died in hospital.

The boy was walking at Kilminchy, Portlaoise, Co. Laois around 4:20pm Saturday afternoon when he was struck by a car.

He was rushed to Midland Regional Hospital Portlaoise in a serious condition. He was pronounced dead a short time later.

The driver of the car, a woman in her 40s, was not injured.

The road was closed overnight. A technical examination was carried out by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators on Sunday morning.
