DUBLIN, Ireland: A record number of Ireland's beaches and marinas have been awarded the prestigious Blue Flag for the 2025 bathing season, marking a new high in environmental recognition across the country.
An Taisce, the environmental group responsible for the awards, granted Blue Flag status to 89 beaches and 10 marinas, surpassing the previous record of 85 beaches.
Kerry topped the list with 15 Blue Flags, followed closely by Donegal with 14. Several beaches regained their Blue Flag status after missing out in previous years, including Cappagh Pier in Co Clare, Ceibh an Spideal in Co Galway, Ballymoney North beach in Co Wexford, and Tramore and Dunmore East in Co Waterford. Achill Island's Keel Beach also maintained its Blue Flag for the 37th consecutive year.
The Blue Flag is one of the world's most recognized eco-labels, promoting environmental awareness and sustainable management of beaches and marinas. Meanwhile, 70 beaches received the Green Coast Award for 2025, matching last year's record. This award recognizes beaches with exceptional water quality, natural beauty, and a commitment to environmental protection.
Ten beaches received both the Blue Flag and Green Coast Award, including Fountainstown and Inchydoney East in Co Cork, Salthill and Silverstrand in Galway City, and Enniscrone in Co Sligo.
At the award ceremony held in Curracloe, Co Wexford, Minister for Housing and Heritage James Browne praised the efforts of local authorities, community groups, and volunteers. "Presenting these awards on a great day in Curracloe and anticipating the happy days ahead for so many families on this very beach over the summer, I am particularly proud that the beautiful beaches and marinas from around my own home county of Wexford are amongst those recognized today," he said.
Cathy Baxter, director of education and community action at An Taisce, highlighted the unprecedented number of sites recognized this year, commending the efforts of local authorities, marina operators, and coastal groups for maintaining high standards.
